Irpino by birth, Alfonso Grassi was a figurative artist. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, graduating in 1940, having illustrious painters as masters. He became the favorite “pupil” of Giorgio De Chirico and friend of Gregorio Sciltian and Pietro Annigoni. He made portraits of great personalities, such as Pope John Paul II, Giorgio De Chirico, the then President of the Republic Sandro Pertini, the then Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti, the Roman prince and banker Alessandro Raffaele Torlonia, etc.
“The Scholar” is a colored silkscreen print, depicting a man, with an open book, in the act of studying. It represents reflection, concentration, intellectualism, the triumph of the mind over the body, of thought over matter. It is an example of transcendental depth for today’s youth. Good condition.
Dimensions: canvas 50 x 60 cm – frame 91 x 72 cm
